CHAPTER fourteen
Some matters could only be settled with complete domination.
âIs he anywhere close?â Noah asked over the radio as he rounded the final corner at Road America. Wisconsin had delivered on a beautiful day of racing, and Noah was taking all of the spoils.
âNowhere close,â Katie preened. âAmazing job, letâs bring it home.â
Noah glanced in his mirror anyway, but there was no sign of Finlayâs blue-and-white livery. Noah had led the whole race, so far ahead that even his pit stop didnât put him at risk of an overtake. Heâd lapped half the field, and the closest car ahead of him was Jacob Pitts, who seemed to be meandering around at half speed in comparison.
âThanks for everything today, guys,â Noah said as he made the final corner. He eased on the throttle and veered toward the pit wall, where Oxbow team members stood on the fences and cheered as he passed. Race winner.
As thrilling as winning was, crossing the finish line gave him a sense of relief. He didnât have to fight for the lead or tempt a collision, so the race had been pretty boring compared to the usual.
No one could say anything about his skill now. For the whole summer break, Noah would have the media talking about his inevitable championship and not about the contract he still had to negotiate with Oxbow. His agent said it was a numbers game now, and every race he won would give him an even better chance at becoming the highest-paid driver on the grid.
Noah didnât really care about the money, but there was a special kind of status that came with being the most valuable person in the series. Sponsorships, media attention, and future driving contracts would have to make offers with that in mind.
âHow did Jochmann end up?â Noah asked, trying to keep it casual as he started a cooldown lap. He hadnât lapped David, so Noah assumed he was at least top ten.
âStandby,â Katie said. âWaiting for his final position.â
Noah waved at the fans in the stands as he went around on his victory lap, giving the occasional thumbs-up when he spotted signs with the Oxbow logo or giant cutouts of his face. Fans were weird. Noah loved them.
âDavid is third,â Katie said, and he could hear her smile through the radio. âThatâs this seasonâs first double podium for Oxbow.â
